Philip Yancey - Vanishing Grace

Over the weekend the city of Kuching is much blessed with the hosting of the famous Christian author Philip Yancey.  This is not the first time he has come to Malaysia, but this is his first time in Kuching.  His sharing was hosted by Trinity Methodist Church, Kuching.

In his first session he shared about his new book, "Vanishing Grace" a follow up to his earlier book "What is so amazing about grace?".  God's grace is not a problem here, but more and more we do not see grace being dispensed even by Christians.  He said in America many people are turning away from God and many hated Christians.  How are we to show grace in such atmosphere?  In his word, how do we dispense grace?  As Christians we are taught to dispense grace to others yet many fall short, including yours truly.

He told a story of a young woman who shared how she ministered to telephone sales people.  Many of these sales people called many potentials each day and mostly irritated people slammed down their phones. Therefore, this woman decided to be patient to them and gave words of encouragements. Many broke down from her encouragement.

We ourselves will have similar experiences, like when we waited at the supermarket check out and the cashier needed her superior to clear an error on the cash machine.  How do we re-act? Or when we go to fast food out lets and there were delays in serving us?  You get the picture.

There are much to learn from his new book "Vanishing Grace".

FBC Family Camp 2015

Last weekend, on 22nd and 23rd Aug 2015, our church had our family camp at Dynawood Beach Stay, Semantan.  It was about one and the half hour drive from Kuching.

It was a great family camp and everyone had a great time of fellowship and also great foods!  Thanks to our brothers Thomas, Nelson, Nick, and Sisters Nancy, Jenny, Hwei Choo, and many others who put in much work marinating as well as bar be queing the meats.  We had chicken wings, lamb, crabs, corn, and sausages.

We had beach games for everyone.  After dinner on Saturday, we sat down and sang many songs, thanks to Brother Paul Wong who played the guitar and also our comedian Kristie Pui.

Of course we listened to a message by our invited speaker Pastor Wong Chee Keong, from Charis Church, KL.

All in all a great camp!

A Christian Reaction to Same Sex Marriage

Recently the US Supreme Court approved same sex marriage in the US.  This is a landmark decision.  But what is it meant for Christians?

It is more blessed to give than receive

The teaching of Jesus about giving appeared to be contrary to logic, but indeed His Words are true even to this day.  Recently an experiment was conducted in Malaysia to ascertain how the general public react to giving and receiving from strangers.  It is heart warming to learn that many people have the heart for helping others and they do not mind giving.  Even the poor are willing to give.

It is very touching to watch how the Nepalese workers are willing to give a beggar even though they do not earn much and their families back home are in dire needs of their monetary support.  The matters are worst now that many of their families suffered from the recent earthquake in Nepal.  Many are now homeless.

Watch the following video of the experiment done in Malaysia recently:

On the flip side, there is a video of a "beggar" who gives the money to strangers who pass by instead of he receiving the money from the strangers.  Some people were rude, some could not understand, but best of all some insisted on giving the "beggar".

Just like Jesus taught : Acts 20:35 " In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

Watch this video of the flip side story of giving:

FGA 36th Anniversary

On 12th April 2015 FGA, Kuala Lumpur celebrated their 36th anniversary at Bukit Jalil stadium in Kuala Lumpur.  Personally I am a part of this great Church because I was baptized there more than 10 years ago and I still have many brothers and sisters worshiping in this Church.  As I gathered, the 36th anniversary was a tremendous event especially in terms of out pouring of the Spirit and the number of participants.  All in about 13,000 participated in this event.  If I am not mistaken, this was one of the biggest Christian gatherings in Malaysia.  It was an unprecedented worship and celebration event.

Pastor Philip Mantofa, the pastor of Mawar Sharon Church of Indonesia preached at this event.  When he made an altar call, 6,000 participants rushed forward to the front stage!  Hallelujah!  that had not been seen in Malaysia before!  All glory to God!

Christianity Malaysia wrote an article of this event, you can read at this link:

RIP Lee Kuan Yew

Just yesterday, the world witnessed the passing of a great Asian leader Mr. Lee Kuan Yew.  It is indeed a great loss to the nation of Singapore.  He was the man who created Singapore out of nothing so to speak.  Because when Singapore left Malaysia, the country had nothing.  It is a small island, there was little land for agriculture, or any industries, yet he built it into a first class country today.  Today Singapore has one of the highest standard of living in the world.

However, we know that he did not know the Lord which in a sense is a negative.  But God had plans and He used Mr. Lee to prosper Singapore.  Just like many pagans in Biblical times, God used them to prosper Israel.  God used Pharaoh to help in delivering the Jews out of Egypt to the Promised Land.  There are many similar stories in the Bible.

Pastor Kenny Chee of Singapore has written about Mr. Lee Kuan Yew.  You can read at the link here:

Airasia Plane Crashed

Indeed it had been a bad year for Malaysia and also many around the world.  The three planes crashes happened to be Malaysian. Many nationalities also perished in these crashes.

Why these happened seem to be beyond our understanding.  Only God knows the answer.  We Christians know that God is sovereign and He is in control even though we do not have any answer to these tragedies.

About 41 members of Mawar Sharon Church from Indonesia headed by Pastor Philip Mantofa perished in the Airasia flight.

We are saddened by these tragedies, and despite these, our Lord wants us to look to Him.  Let us continue to pray and uphold our brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering now in various countries.  Our hearts and prayers go out to them.
